Weasel Torch Carriers
As the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay progresses, more and more torch stories concerning Weasel Workers and some of our special friends are coming to the fore. CDongratulations to all our friends and members have been chosen to carry the torch. We hope to acquire a collection of photos of our friends anbd members as they strutt their stuff. Here are a few Weasels who will be in the torch relay :
Ursula Fisher
carried the torch on Oct 31st in Duncan, on Vancouver
Island. Ursula joined a group of volunteers from the
Vancouver Acquarium who ran the torch. Ursula is in the middle row, 2nd
from left She reports that it was an experience she will
never forget.
Gail Bremer will carry the torch on Feb 5th between Squamish and Whistler.
Kerry Firstbrook and Andre Janyk will carry the Olympic Torch on Feb 6th between Whistler and Pemberton.
Rowing
Olympian and Weasel Worker, Joy
Fera will carry the Olympic Torch for about 300m
on Thursday, February 11 somewhere between West Vancouver, Coquitlam
and Vancouver. Joy will dedicate her run to Jack Poole, Wendy Ladner
Beaudry and Dr, Gene Sutton of the COC. Joy invites fellow
Weasels to run along with her. Congratulations, Joy!
Joy shares the following inspring story: "I nominated an 81 year old 1948 Olympic high jumper, Shirley Olafsson, from Richmond, to carry the Beijing 2008 Paralympic torch. I believe she was Canada’s first Paralympian as she was born with a club foot, but had to compete against able bodied athletes. She placed 10th. She is in the BC Sports Hall of Fame, individually, as well as a member of a basketball team. In one year, she has shared her torch with over 6,000, mainly kids. She is going to donate her 2008 and 2010 torches to the Hall of Fame. Amazing woman."
Three of our close friends from Whistler Blackcomb are scheduled to carry the torch. Congratulations go to Doug Forseth, Cate Webster and Arthur DeJong.
For a
little history, check out the photo to the right. Yes, it's Dave Moore who ran
the torch for the Calgary 1998 games. Dave tells us that the 1998 torch
crew ran about a mile, not just 300 metres. There were no guards or no
press. Just him and a single companion. Although he offered,
we will not force Dave to wear that 1988 jacket.
