Whistler Cup - 2009 |
The
2009 version of the WMSC's Whistler
Cup was a great success. From April 10th through April
12th, over 400 juvenile competitors from 20 countries enjoyed three
days
of great ski racing.
The Super-G and GS were held on Whistler Mountain's Raven and Ptarmigan runs and the slalom and Kombi were held on Double-Trouble. Separate races were held for each age group, K1 and K2. With minor exceptions, the weather was good, and the tracks held up really well. Parents, coaches, competators and volunteers all caught the spirit of the event and everyone seemed to have a great time.
A highlight for the kids was the parade through Whistler Village. Following a phalanx of Mounties in Red Serge, the ubiquitous piper, and a vintage fire truck, competators and coachs marched under their national flags. The Parade drew many visiting parents and local residents.
The Whistler Cup is a world-class event in which the WMSC and everyone involved can have great pride. Our congratulations to the race organizers; in partucular to SG/GS Chief of Race, Dave Oser, Chief of Course, Dave Willis and his able assistant, Lisa Ferguson, on the Raven / Ptarmigan side. Over on on Double Trouble, SL/Kombi CoR, Jim McGovern and CoC John Cullen, did a masterful job,.. John was ably assisted by Stu Swette and Eric Pehota.
Although this is a Club event, staffed mainly by WMSC members and parents, a whack of Weasels turned out to lend a hand. Race Chair Dave Newton extends these thanks to these Weasels. Our own "Bamboo", who acted as Assistant Referee for the SG, had these words to add.
Weasel Workers who turned out to enjoy the Spring weather and to help things along included the following (who have I missed?). Thom Theys has had so much fun at the Whistler Cup in prior years, that he came all the way from California, even after a full stint at the IPC World Cup.

Special mention needs to be made of a couple of Australian parents who did yeoman service. Thanks, Michael and Kim. It was a great week!
