Daily Newsletters (Feb 2 through Feb 24 2008)

Race Warriors Lou Cooke and Bruce HollidayDuring our February 2008 event, Tess Evans will be publishing a daily newsletter  that will be given  out  at the morning check-in at Dusty's.   For those of you who cannot be with us, or who will arrive later in the event, here's a way to keep current on what's going on.  Our Daily Newsletter will not be  emailed to our membership, but will be displayed here, on our Weasel  Worker Web site.

Until we get going, here are a couple of examples from last year's  Pontiac GMC Canadian Championships

Monday  Feb 11 -    Women's GS and Slalom for SC will be run today!    Last night's party was very well attended, and enjoyed by all!   Thanks to Sharon and the rest of Peggy's crew.  The GS was a wrap, but fog caused cancellation of the women's  Slalom.

Chief of Course, Rick Hume and mother, Course and Beer Tent Worker BunnyMonday  Feb 12 -    The foggy and snowy weather persists.  Today, we have Canadian qualifying races for the  Junior World Championships.  Let's hope for clearer weather.

Tuesday  Feb 13 -   Four  slalom races  in the can yesterday, two men's and two women's .   Junior GS races planned for today.  Weather cooler so perhaps we're into a better weather pattern.

Wednesday Feb 14 - No newsletter today as we transit to the WC regime.  There will be an orientation session for volunteers today and on the 15th and 16th.  A water injection program is underway on the Dave Murray track in preparation for the Men's SG.  We are hoping that the Finish Area for the two tracks will be laid out today.

Many thanks to Tess Evans for our steady feed of entertaining and friendly newsletters .  We are no longer being fed  newsletters,  which are now being published only on the  Whistler Alpine Event  Volunteers site.    Your Weasel editor may be able to offer a small amount of news as we move forward, but there is precisous little time  to update this site.

Mon Feb 18 -  The Beer Tent's feature palm tree has been returned to it's rightful place of honour, cooling cider for everyone's enjoyment.

Tuesday Feb 19  - Whistler  was decked out today in its very best.  The Franz's downhill track was in great shape, the weather was clear, cool and sunny and the first Ladies training run went  off without a hitch.  It was a perfect day for ski racing.   Our volunteer numbers have swollen  considerably in the last few days, as the World Cup races approach.  The remainerf the week is going to be very busy in the Beer Tent.

Congratulations to Bruce Holliday and Rick Hume,  their coordinators and everyone who have worked so hard for months bringing a brand new downhill track into being.    Congratulations also to Peter Bosinger andRod MacLeod  and their teams who are now seeing some fruition to years of had work.

John Benbow has been hard at work on the Men's track and a two-day  "water bar"  program has been successfully completed.  The Dave Murray track is in great shape and a couple of free-skiing periods for the athletes are planned for Feb 20,  prior to the Men's  SG on  Feb 21.

Wednesday  Feb 20  -  Another successful day on Whistler Mountain .  A "free-ski" was held  on the Dave Murray course for the men and a second training run was concluded for the Ladies.  It was another busy night in the Beer Tent, which is being generously sponsored by Carlesberg.   Volunteers are gently reminded that we recycle  pop cans and beer cups.  Please use the large blue bins for your cans and cups.  The smaller garbage cans are for garbage only.

Thursday  Feb 21.  -  The Men's GS is scheduled for today, followed by a third training run for  the Ladies.    As we write this at 5:30AM, there is a brilliant moon is shining through the window.   It's going to be a great day for World Cup ski racing.

Don't forget.................. we have a huge tear down task after the races are concluded.  Feb 25 will b e a very busy day.  Please do your part!

Tuesday Feb  26 -  Wrap-up.     After a 10 year absence,  World Cup ski racing  made a spectacular return to Whistler.  The weather and the tracks could hardly have been better.  All of the races went off on schedule with very few delays and very few crashes.  The lower course did soften a bit in the sun, but not enough to cause problems.  Everyone was very happy with the results.

We regret that we were unable to maintain a daily report of activities during the WC period.  The days were just not long enough.

Most of the course tear down was completed on Feb 24, after the Ladies Combined, with some crews working until 6:00PM or later.  Most of the Men's track had been deconstructed the day before.

Thanks to Maria and Natalie who hosted an impromtu beach party behind the equipment cans at Timing Flats, complete with a sisal  hula skirt and Weasel-strength Margaritas.   Thanks  also to Owen who hosted a last hurrah at Dustys, after which those still standing finished with a \Last Supper' at Hoz's.   A toast was offered to all those hard-working  Weasels from so many places who had banded together to pull off a whole month of track preparation and ski racing.

On Feb 25, the Beer Tent was cleaned out and the tent itself was dismantled on the 26th.  Thanks to Owen and Lloyd who hung around to help turn off the lights.   Only Rod MacLeod, Rob Bacon , Jelly and their crews remain as they clean up and dismantle the Timing  Flats structures and take down and store the A-Nets.
